Life is filled with milestones. You might get a promotion, move to a new city, welcome a child or receive a diagnosis you never expected. Health care decisions may not feel like milestones in the moment, but they can have a lasting impact on your health and finances.
Every decision is an opportunity to support the life you're building. Here are five moments when knowing your benefits can make a real difference.
After a Diagnosis or Injury: Make Every Dollar Count
A diagnosis or injury can change your priorities overnight. Suddenly, you're choosing providers, specialists and treatment options while managing the emotional and financial impact of an unexpected health issue.
During a stressful time, dealing with insurance may feel overwhelming. However, if you use the tools already included with your plan, you may find the process easier to navigate.
- Provider Finder helps you search for in-network doctors, hospitals and specialists by location, gender and quality ratings. Patient reviews can help you find a doctor who aligns with your preferences. You can also estimate costs in Provider Finder.
- Health Advisors are medical professionals who provide no-cost, personalized guidance during challenging health situations, including chronic condition management, recovery after surgery or hospitalization, serious illness and high-risk pregnancy. They may proactively reach out to offer support, coordinate care and help schedule follow-up appointments.
- Member Rewards is a useful tool to check before scheduling nonemergency procedures. Costs can vary significantly between facilities, and eligible procedures may qualify for a cash reward.
- Two pilot programs, Lantern and TRS Motion+, can help connect you with high-quality, lower-cost options for certain surgeries. Because these programs are still pilots, they are only available in certain regions while we continue to learn how they can best support TRS-ActiveCare participants.
Support during life's more difficult milestones can help ease the burden that comes with them. Your health plan is something you already invest in, so make sure you're using it when you need it most. It can help improve health outcomes and reduce costs.
Retirement: A Benefit You've Earned
When you prepare for retirement, it’s important to consider all the benefits available to you. TRS-Care is a health care benefit you contributed to throughout your public education career. When exploring your health care options for this new stage of life, take time to consider the value of a benefit you’ve helped build over the years.
Through TRS-Care, you have several plans available to you, all with the same eligibility requirements:
- TRS-Care Standard for public education retirees under the age of 65 or not Medicare-eligible.
- TRS-Care Medicare Advantage for public education retirees age 65 and older or Medicare-eligible.
- TRS-Care Dental for any public education retiree who qualifies.
- TRS-Care Vision for any public education retiree who qualifies.
Keep in mind that if you worked in higher education, you may not be eligible for TRS-Care benefits through TRS.
- Review Eligibility & Enrollment to confirm your eligibility, coverage start date and any important enrollment deadlines. Be sure to pay extra attention during your Initial Enrollment Opportunity, because after that deadline passes, you will not be able to enroll again until you reach your age 65 opportunity or experience a special enrollment event (rare).
- Sign up for a Retire Healthy with TRS-Care webinar. These quarterly webinars walk you through the ins-and-outs of eligibility, how to enroll, pricing, and the benefits included in each plan. Find a session that works for you at TRS Health Events.
- Be ready to enroll online through MyTRS. Enrolling online saves you money, time, and effort. The process is simple, and we have a step-by-step guide on how to complete enrollment this way. Learn more at MyTRS Member Portal and TRS-Care.
- If you were enrolled in TRS-ActiveCare, be sure to review and understand the new benefit structures of the TRS-Care plans. They work differently than TRS-ActiveCare, and it will be a change. The 2027 TRS-Care Plan Highlights has information about how each plan works.
One of the biggest advantages of TRS-Care is predictability. The TRS-Care fund has remained in a strong financial position for years, keeping premium changes modest when adjustments are needed and, in some years, avoiding increases altogether.
Combined with annual out-of-pocket limits, TRS-Care can make it easier to plan for health care expenses and build a retirement budget with confidence.
And because you contributed to TRS-Care throughout your career, you're considering a benefit you've already invested in as you compare your retirement health care options.
Family Planning: From Pregnancy Planning to Parenthood
Whether you are planning a pregnancy, expecting a baby or bringing a newborn home, this is one of the most valuable times to understand your benefits. It's a stage of life that should be filled with joy and understanding what's available to you can help you focus on that joy rather than worry about small details.
- Use Provider Finder to locate an in-network OB-GYN and, later, a pediatrician. If you already have an established OB-GYN, check whether they are eligible for Member Rewards. Rewards are also available for some pregnancy-related procedures, including fetal ultrasounds.
- TRS-ActiveCare maternity care is covered under global billing, which means you aren't billed until after your baby is born. Depending on your TRS-ActiveCare health plan, copays and coinsurance may still apply if your deductible has not been met or if you need tests or procedures outside routine prenatal care.
- The Ovia Health app provides support for fertility, pregnancy and postpartum care, including postpartum depression support. New parents can also use the Ovia Parenting app. These tools are designed to help make this stage of life less stressful. See all women’s and family health benefits.
- Added-value benefits include:
- Two electric breast pumps per plan year
- Coverage of up to $150 for hospital-grade breast pumps
- Six lactation counseling visits per year covered at 100%
- Family planning services, including contraceptive options
- Use Blue Access for Members to estimate maternity-related costs before delivery, making it easier to plan for future expenses.
- After your baby is born, call a Personal Health Guide at 1-866-355-5999 for help adding your newborn to your plan and navigating next steps.
This season of life is about making memories, not worrying about medical bills. Taking time to use your TRS-ActiveCare benefits can help you focus on your growing family and feel more confident in your decisions. Plus, the money you save by using your benefits wisely can be put toward the milestones still to come, from your child's first birthday to their first day of college.
New Medications: Support From the Beginning
A new diagnosis often comes with a new prescription. Medication costs can vary widely, and informed decisions can make a real difference in your out-of-pocket costs.
Ask about lower-cost options. An Express Scripts pharmacist can review your medications and help identify whether a lower-cost generic option is available.
Connect with a condition specialist. If you're managing a chronic or complex condition, you can speak with a pharmacist who specializes in that area.
Review all your medications together. A one-on-one medication review can help identify potential drug interactions, duplicate prescriptions or opportunities to simplify your treatment plan.
Consider home delivery. If available through your plan, Express Scripts Pharmacy can deliver up to a 90-day supply of eligible medications directly to your home.
Turn on savings alerts. Log in to your account and update your communication preferences to receive notifications when a lower-cost prescription option is available.
Ask your pharmacist what services are available. Depending on your plan and where you live, your pharmacist may be able to provide certain vaccines, treatments or other services.
More details about each of these are available through Express Scripts Pharmacy Benefits Services.
Prescription costs can add up, especially if you take a medication long term. A quick conversation with a pharmacist can help you avoid unnecessary costs, identify lower-cost options and make sure your medications are working together safely. Small savings each month can add up over time.
Annual Enrollment: Choose What Fits Your Life Today
Every summer, Annual Enrollment can feel routine. It is tempting to keep your current coverage and move on. But your needs may have changed since last year. The plan that worked for you at 32 may not be the best fit at 45.
Take a few minutes to consider if you've added a dependent, take a new medication, or see a specialist more often.
TRS-ActiveCare offers several plan options, including TRS-ActiveCare Primary, TRS-ActiveCare Primary+ and TRS-ActiveCare HD. The best choice depends on how you use health care services, not just the monthly premium.
- Ask you district when your Annual Enrollment period will begin and end
- Review the Enrollment Toolkit to compare available plans.
- Compare current Coverage and Benefits with your existing plan. Deductibles, copays and other cost-sharing may change from year to year.
- Watch the enrollment videos for short, simple overviews of your options.
Choosing the right plan before you need care can have the biggest impact on your out-of-pocket costs throughout the year. A thoughtful decision during this time can make future health care decisions easier and less expensive.
