Important Update for Medicare-eligible TRS-Care plan participants without Medicare Part B

Starting Jan. 1, 2026, TRS-Care participants eligible for Medicare must enroll in and pay for Medicare Part B in order to enroll and remain in a TRS-Care health plan  — no exceptions.

  • Retirees, dependents, surviving spouses, and surviving dependent children eligible for Medicare must enroll in and keep paying for Medicare Part B to keep their TRS-Care coverage.
  • TRS-Care Medicare Advantage will be the sole health plan option for Medicare-eligible TRS retirees.
  • If you stop paying for Medicare Part B, you will lose your TRS-Care Medicare Advantage coverage. Plus, you will not be able to re-enroll in TRS-Care Medicare Advantage if you aren’t enrolled in Medicare Part B   (outside of a special enrollment event).
  • Timely enrollment in Medicare Part B can also help you avoid higher premiums to Social Security from delayed enrollment.

What You Need to Do

If you want to enroll in and keep TRS-Care coverage on or after Jan. 1, 2026, you must enroll in Medicare Part B and keep paying the premium. You will lose your TRS-Care coverage if you don’t pay for Medicare Part B.
